Hossegor: our surf and beach guide for the summer

Starting point. Hossegor, about 1h50 from Bagnères-de-Bigorre.

Mountains in the morning, waves in the evening. Hossegor is the other end of our world, the world of boards under arms and evenings that smell of salt. This Landes resort has become a global surfing reference, and it has enough to fill a whole weekend even if you never touch a board.

Stage 1 · For beginners

La Centrale, to get started

Right in the town centre, this is the spot where most surf schools give their first lessons. More accessible waves, an even sandy bottom, and everyone in view from the seafront terraces. The right place to start if you are touching a board for the first time.

Stage 2 · For advanced surfers

La Gravière, the magazine-cover wave

★
not to be
missed

A tubular, powerful, technical wave. This is where many of the international competitions that made Hossegor's reputation take place. It holds its shape up to 2.5 metres on a falling tide. Not a spot for beginners, but the spot to watch from the beach if you want to understand why surfers from all over the world come here.

Les Culs Nus, right next door

Between Seignosse and La Gravière, this spot makes the transition. Less well known, and often a little calmer.

Stage 3 · The legend

La Nord, the big show

The best-known spot on the whole Landes coast. Offshore waves can reach 6 metres, making it one of the most famous beach breaks in the world. Not at all recommended for beginners: strong currents and power well above average. But during big-swell season, it is a show to watch from the sand, coffee in hand.

Stage 4 · The break

Lake Hossegor and Basque-Landes architecture

If the swell is too big or you are travelling with children, Lake Hossegor offers four calm lakeside beaches, including the Chênes-Lièges beach with the Handiplage accessibility label. It is also a chance to look up at the Basque-Landes villas lining the lake and the golf course: white rendered façades, half-timbering, loggias. A unique architectural style born in the 1920s, notably by the architect Henri Godbarge.

The town centre and its terraces

Surf-style shops, market, ice-cream parlours. Just the thing to wind down the day before the next morning's session.
