The Lesponne valley: the secret corner of the Hautes-Pyrénées

Just a few minutes from Bagnères-de-Bigorre, the Lesponne valley remains one of the most unspoilt corners of the Hautes-Pyrénées. Here's why it's worth the detour.

A deep valley, far from the bustle

Unlike the big passes that are so busy in summer, the Lesponne valley keeps a peaceful atmosphere. The narrow, winding road that climbs it snakes between forests and meadows, accompanied the whole way by the sound of the mountain stream.

Lac Bleu, the jewel of the valley

Lac Bleu de Lesponne is the area's flagship destination. You have to earn it with a hike of a few hours from the car park, but its striking turquoise colour, nestled between rocky slopes, more than rewards the effort. It's one of the most photogenic lakes in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

A valley for all levels

The Lesponne valley isn't just about Lac Bleu. Several shorter trails let you enjoy the setting without setting off on a long hike, following the stream or climbing gently towards the first summer pastures. Enough to satisfy families and seasoned walkers alike.

Unspoilt wildlife and flora

Less visited than other Pyrenean valleys, Lesponne is home to quieter nature. It's not unusual to see birds of prey soaring above the ridges, and the meadows are covered in wildflowers from spring onwards.

Practical tips for visiting Lesponne

  • Set off early to avoid the crowds on the Lac Bleu trail in midsummer.
  • Bring food and drink, as there are no shops in the valley beyond the hamlet.
  • Check the weather before you leave: summer storms build up quickly in the mountains.

Discreet and unspoilt, the Lesponne valley remains one of our favourite places to find calm, just a stone's throw from Bagnères-de-Bigorre.
