The Most Beautiful Sunsets on the Atlantic Coast

On the Atlantic coast, between the Landes and the Basque Country, no two sunsets are ever quite the same. It is an appointment people keep almost religiously at the end of the day, when the light shifts and the sky blazes above the ocean.

A light that belongs to the Atlantic alone

Unlike the Mediterranean, here the sun sinks straight into the water, right in front of you, with nothing in the way. Shades of orange, pink and violet are reflected on the waves and the wet sand, and the silhouettes of surfers returning from their last session create magnificent backlit scenes. It is this precise moment, at dusk, that many people come to the coast for.

Our favourite spots so you don't miss a thing

  • The Rocher de la Vierge, in Biarritz: a 360° view over the ocean and the Basque coast, with the Pyrenees sometimes visible in the distance on clear days.
  • La Gravière beach, in Hossegor: a legendary surf spot where you can watch the last waves of the day stand out in the low light.
  • The beaches of the southern Landes, wilder and less crowded, for a sunset with no one else around.
  • The Saint-Jean-de-Luz seafront, more sheltered, ideal for watching the sky change colour above the bay.

How to make the most of the moment

Arrive a little before the announced sunset time: the most intense colours often appear a few minutes before the sun touches the horizon, and linger on afterwards. Bring a blanket or a fleece, even in summer, as the temperature drops quickly once the sun disappears and the ocean wind picks up.

The right habit for a perfect evening

Many locals end the session with an impromptu picnic on the sand or a last coffee on a terrace, gazing out to sea. That too is the spirit of the Atlantic coast: taking the time to watch the day come to an end, doing nothing other than simply being there.
