What are the best surf spots in France with equipment rental?
Between the Landes and the Basque Country, the French Atlantic coast offers a wide variety of surf spots suited to all levels. Here's an overview to help you plan your next session.
The iconic spots of the Landes
The Landes coast is home to some of the most renowned surf spots in France. Hossegor, with its consistent sandbanks, attracts a large part of the international surf scene every year, particularly at well-known spots such as La Gravière and La Nord. A little further north, Seignosse and Capbreton offer similar conditions, often slightly less crowded in peak season.
Further south, Moliets-et-Maa and Vieux-Boucau also offer good conditions, with a generally more family-friendly atmosphere than Hossegor's best-known spots.
The Basque Country, between tradition and renowned spots
Biarritz remains a historic benchmark for surfing in France, with several spots near the Rocher de la Vierge and the Côte des Basques, accessible to different levels. A little further south, Guéthary and Bidart offer more technical spots, popular with experienced surfers, while the Anglet area has several wider beaches suited to learning.
An ideal region to progress
The density of spots in a relatively small area means you can try out several wave configurations in a single day, depending on the tide and swell — a real advantage for progressing quickly.
How to find equipment rental on site
Almost all the spots mentioned above have surf schools and equipment rental shops right next to the beaches, especially in the summer season. The simplest option is usually to ask on site, at the local tourist office or at the lifeguard stations, which can easily point you towards the rental shops available depending on the period.
Remember to book your equipment in advance in high season (July-August), when demand is highest at the best-known spots. Out of season, rentals are generally easier to find at the last minute, with a choice of thicker wetsuits suited to cooler water.
