Summer suitcase: the mountain-ocean guide by Wailoa
Route notebook · The suitcase
What to pack for a summer between mountains and ocean
Starting point. July, the bag is half packed.
The classic summer trap in south-west France: heading for the mountains and ending up at the ocean, or the other way round, without being properly prepared for either. We have made that mistake often enough to have drawn up a checklist that works on both terrains. Here is what we pack ourselves when the suitcase has to work just as well at 2,000 m as by the water.
Moment 1 · Morning at altitude
The layers that go hiking
Even in July, an early start for the Lac Bleu or the Bastan lakes means temperatures of around 10 to 15°C. Our rule: never one thick layer, always two thin ones you can take off as you climb.
- A technical or light cotton t-shirt that dries quickly once you start to sweat
- A fleece or sherpa to slip on as soon as the trail leaves the forest
- A light windbreaker, folded in your bag, for the summit or a gust on the ridge
Moment 2 · Afternoon at the beach
What goes from the car to the sand
Once back down, head for Hossegor or Capbreton. The simplest approach: keep an outfit that works as well on a café terrace as after a swim, so you don't have to change three times a day.
- A cotton t-shirt that handles salt and sand without getting damaged
- Comfortable shorts: not technical sports shorts, but proper casual shorts
- A cap or bucket hat, underrated but essential on La Centrale at midday
Moment 3 · Evening, wherever you are
The piece that saves every evening
★the bag's
essential
Whether you are on a terrace in Bagnères or facing the ocean watching the sunset, the temperature always drops in the evening. A sweatshirt or a light jacket is the piece we never leave at home, summer or winter, mountains or beach.
And for surprise rain
South-west France likes to remind us that summer is never 100% guaranteed. A small packable waterproof jacket takes up the space of a pair of socks in your bag and saves your day.
Moment 4 · The all-terrain essentials
What works on both terrains
- Sturdy socks, for hiking or with sandals, never the same pair two days running
- A light backpack, able to carry a fleece in the morning and a beach towel in the afternoon
- A reusable water bottle, useful at 2,000 m as well as on the sand at 2 pm
- A beanie or bandana, useless until the day it becomes indispensable
Frequently asked questions
How cold is it in the Pyrenees mountains on a summer morning?
Generally between 10 and 15°C at the start of an early hike, even in midsummer, with temperatures rising sharply once the sun is up.
How can you travel light between mountains and ocean?
By choosing layerable pieces rather than separate outfits for each activity. A fleece and a technical t-shirt cover most situations.
Do you need a rain jacket in summer in south-west France?
Yes, even in July. A light, packable jacket is enough to avoid being caught out by a late-afternoon storm.
The bag is ready. Now you just have to decide whether the mountains or the ocean win this weekend.
