Walks on La Rhune: between mountains and ocean
Starting point. 905 m, the summit where mountain and ocean finally meet in a single view.
La Rhune, or Larrun in Basque, is the most iconic summit on the Basque coast. What makes it unique in our mountain-meets-ocean world: it is one of the rare places where you can literally see both at once from the same spot.
01 · On foot
The climb from the Col de Saint-Ignace
The trail starting from the Col de Saint-Ignace, in Ascain, takes you to the summit in about 2h30 of steady walking. The landscape changes gradually, from ferns to high-altitude meadows, and you have a good chance of meeting pottoks, the small Basque horses that roam semi-wild on the mountainside.
02 · By rack railway
The little train of La Rhune, since 1924
★centenary
and legendary
For a gentle ascent, the rack railway links the Col de Saint-Ignace to the summit in about 35 to 40 minutes, at a snail's pace of 8 to 9 km/h. The original wooden carriages, in service since 1924, carry around 350,000 visitors a year. Booking is strongly recommended in high season.
03 · At the summit
A 360° panorama, sea and mountains
On a clear day, the view from the summit takes in the French and Spanish Basque coast, the Atlantic Ocean, the Landes forest and the first foothills of the Pyrenees. The French-Spanish border literally runs across the summit, just a few metres from the train's arrival station.
04 · Practical tips
What to know before you go
Even in full sunshine, the wind at the summit makes a windbreaker or light fleece essential, whatever the season. Parking at the Col de Saint-Ignace is limited, so parking in Sare and taking the shuttle is often the most relaxed option in high season.
